A Phenomenon Repeatedly Observed
In global procurement of RTO equipment for film coating, one phenomenon deserves attention: whether a project is located in Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, or South America, the RTO system designer and manufacturer is highly likely to come from China.
This is not an incidental observation. China has become the world‘s largest manufacturer of industrial RTO systems. In 2025, China’s VOCs treatment equipment export value reached USD 3.97 billion, primarily flowing to Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East, and North Africa. In the same year, China‘s RTO equipment export value was estimated at USD 680 million, with Southeast Asia as the primary destination.
Why Concentrated in China: Three Structural Reasons
Reason One: The World’s Largest-Scale Deployment Experience.
China underwent the world‘s largest-scale deployment of VOCs treatment equipment during its 14th Five-Year Plan period. In 2025, China’s VOCs treatment equipment market exceeded RMB 70 billion, expected to approach RMB 80 billion in 2026. The domestic substitution rate of Chinese enterprises in medium-low concentration, large-flow treatment scenarios increased from less than 40% in 2020 to 67% in 2025.
What does this deployment scale mean? It means vast engineering data, failure modes, and iterative improvements. An RTO supplier without experience across hundreds of projects‘ commissioning and operation will struggle to truly understand the patterns of heat exchange media blockage, the timing optimization of valve switching, and the effects of different solvent systems on combustion conditions.
Take Hangzhou Yurcent as an example: its 360-person technical team includes over 60 dedicated R&D experts, with more than 800 systems delivered across 30+ industries, and equipment operating in 15 countries and regions including Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Vietnam, and Thailand. This project density is difficult for suppliers in other countries to replicate.
Reason Two: Cost Competitiveness.
For equivalent technical specifications, Chinese RTO manufacturers’ capital costs are typically 20% to 40% below European counterparts. The sources of this price differential include: lower manufacturing costs, more complete local supply chain, and more intense domestic market competition.
Domestic substitution rates for key components such as catalysts and ceramic heat exchange media have exceeded 70%, with costs 40% lower than imported products. This means Chinese suppliers have genuine room in their cost structure to offer competitive quotes, rather than relying on low-price strategies at the expense of quality.
Reason Three: Regulation-Driven Technical Adaptation Capability.
China‘s VOCs emission standards have tightened rapidly over the past five years, with key industry emission limits tightened by an average of 20%. This rapidly tightening regulatory environment has forced Chinese suppliers to continuously iterate their technology.
A concrete example is the reduction in self-sustaining operation concentration. Yurcent’s rotary valve RTO claims self-sustaining operation at concentrations as low as 1.2 g/Nm³, with verified thermal efficiency of 97% to 98.7%. Such performance metrics were forced out under China‘s stringent energy consumption standards—China’s 2025 revised VOCs emission standard raised the RTO thermal efficiency threshold from 85% to 92%.
This Is Not a “Made in China” Story, but a “Designed in China” Story
The key distinction overseas buyers need to understand: the role of Chinese suppliers is not only manufacturing, but design.
The case of Zeeco China winning an RTO project order from Thai Oil PCL illustrates this. Zeeco China provided not a standard product, but a customized ZRTO solution for VOCs generated from the client‘s CFP (Clean Fuel Project) wastewater treatment unit, achieving operation without additional fuel under design conditions. This is application engineering capability, not merely manufacturing capability.
Suzhou Krantz provided Smart RTO exhaust treatment solutions for automotive parts factories in Tennessee and Michigan, USA. Its modular skid-mounted design features “plug-and-play” characteristics and has been exported to Thailand, the U.S., Mexico, Czech Republic, Russia, and other markets. The success of such projects depends on understanding North American safety standards and emission requirements and integrating them into the design.
The Actual Boundaries of Chinese Suppliers: Three Dimensions Requiring Careful Evaluation
For overseas buyers, the advantages of choosing Chinese suppliers are real, but the boundaries are equally real. The following three dimensions require focused evaluation.
Dimension One: Cross-Border Delivery and On-Site Coordination Capability.
RTO equipment installation requires foundation work, lifting, piping connections, and system commissioning. When equipment is shipped from China to an overseas project site, the supplier‘s on-site coordination capability becomes critical to project success.
A reference capability model comes from Mikrouna’s overseas delivery of a pouch battery production line: 53 trucks, 260 customized wooden crates, 18 days for packaging and shipping, on-site installation restoration, full-line mechanical and electrical connection, process verification, operator training, and finally FAC signing with remote O&M support initiated. This turnkey project delivery capability is a core indicator when evaluating suppliers.
Dimension Two: Regulatory Fit for the Target Market.
Chinese RTOs are primarily designed according to Chinese GB standards. For overseas projects, target market regulatory requirements may involve differences in monitoring system design, control system documentation, and performance verification protocols. For example, Brazil‘s CETESB and CONAMA framework requirements differ from Chinese GB standards, and Chinese supplier documentation typically requires substantial adaptation work.
A positive signal is that leading Chinese suppliers are proactively adapting to international standards. Zeeco China executed ASME, PED, ATEX, IECEx, API, ASTM, ISO, EN, GB, and other international standards across system design, material selection, equipment manufacturing, quality inspection, and performance testing in the Thai Oil project.
Dimension Three: Local Service Response Capability.
RTO is not “install and forget” equipment. Its maintenance cycle is every six months, but fault response capability directly affects factory continuous operation.
For overseas buyers, the core questions are: does the supplier have a service team or partner in the target market? What is the spare parts supply cycle? What are the remote monitoring capabilities? A weekend valve failure should not require waiting for a technician to fly in from China.
Some Chinese suppliers are already addressing this. Newamstar has established service centers and spare parts centers in key regional markets, relying on remote O&M systems for technical support and online diagnostics, while receiving overseas customer technicians for training in China. This “support and accompany” service model is becoming standard configuration for Chinese suppliers’ cross-border delivery.
An Evaluation Checklist for Overseas Buyers
If you are evaluating Chinese RTO suppliers, the following questions deserve clarification during technical discussions.
About design capability: Does the supplier have similar project references in your industry and solvent system? Can it provide verified data on thermal efficiency, purification efficiency, and self-sustaining operation concentration?
About standard adaptation: Is the supplier familiar with your market‘s emission standards and permitting requirements? Can it provide technical documentation in the required local format?
About delivery capability: Does the supplier have cross-border project delivery experience? Who is responsible for on-site coordination during installation and commissioning? What is the estimated timeline?
About service capability: Does the supplier have a service team or partner in your region? What is the spare parts supply cycle? Does it provide remote monitoring and diagnostics?
About cost structure: What does the quote include? Does it cover design, equipment, transport, installation supervision, and commissioning services? Are there additional costs?
